Division One

Frankton v Wroxeter

Frankton hosted 2nd placed Wroxeter in a 40 over encounter at Hardwick Park. After electing to field first, the home side struggled to make early inroads despite numerous chances being created. Former Shropshire player Duncan Bowett led the way with the bat and completed a hard hitting century before being clean bowled for exactly 100. Bowett and Nick Bevan (34) laid the foundations with a solid opening partnership. However, once Bevan was run out Frankton began to take a hold of the innings and pegged back the scoring rate significantly. The spin attack of Tom Wilkie (1-29) and Nalaka De Silva (1-37) were the chief reasons that Wroxeter were limited to 189-5 off 40 overs. Rich Parry-Jones also bowled well whilst taking 2-44.

The Frankton reply got off to a terrible start with Sri Lankan ace De Silva bowled in the 1st over. Wickets began to tumble at regular intervals and at the halfway stage the home side was 5 wickets down and well behind the required rate. It was obvious that a win was unlikely and the task of batting the remaining overs was the plan of action to ensure a losing draw was taken from the game. This objective was achieved with skipper Jordan Parry leading the way with a determined 58 not out, Parry was ably supported by Sam Phillips (19) as the pair added 60 runs for the 6th wicket. The innings eventually ended on 141-7 with 2 wickets each for Bowett and spinner Tom Welti.

Match Drawn: Wroxeter 16 points, Frankton 7 points.

Division Three

Wheaton Aston v Frankton II

Frankton travelled to Title challengers Wheaton Aston, Frankton were invited to bat first on a green wicket which looked to offer some assistance to the bowlers, with Will Symons removed first ball with a deliver that got big of a length it looked as though it could be difficult for Frankton. They were soon 2 downs for only 12 runs, this brought 15 year old Sam Owen to the crease to join opener Rob Strange, the pair soon set about restoring a reasonable score for Frankton. The score passed 100 with the pair together before Strange was dismissed for a well constructed 55. Owen was then joined by Jacob Northwood; the pair continued the good work and making the pitch look easier to bat on. The score reached 150 when Northwood was ran out for 30. Owen was soon dismissed also ran out for a splendid 70. Frankton’s innings finished on 190-6 in the allocated 40 overs.

Wheaton Astons reply got off similarly to Frankton’s with a run out in the first over. Wheaton Aston soon recovered but the introduction of the Lammie brothers soon put paid to their hopes of victory. Richard Lammie picked up 4-44 and younger brother Mark 3-20. Another run out further undermined the Wheaton Aston innings and it was up to Jacob Northwood to finish the innings of, Frankton dismissing Wheaton Aston for 160 to remain at the top of League 3.

Frankton (23 points) beat Wheaton Aston (6 points) by 35 runs.

Division Six

Frankton III v Forton II

Winning the toss Frankton IIIs chose to field and reduced Forton IIs top order to 40 for 4 off 20 overs, but trouble for the fifth wicket due to a solid 50 plus partnership called for spin and the skipper Lloyd Phillips broke it with a caught and bowled, ending on figures of 4 for 47 off 9. Meanwhile Phil Curzon bowled 14 consecutive overs to take two wickets for 66 run and the bowlers were supported by some solid keeping behind the wicket by George Austin. Forton acquired 171 runs for 9 wickets from their full 45 overs; thanks mostly to 71 not out from Roger Spooner.

Frankton started their innings at a quick rate of over 8 an over for the first 6, Opener Lloyd Phillips went on to make 58 before being caught and starting a middle order collapse due to very controlled bowling of Forton's Roger Spooner taking 7of Frankton’s wicket for only 32 runs from 18 overs. This produced a tight ending to the match leaving 3 overs for Frankton to get 12 runs but 9 wickets down. Last man Will James calmly held up an end (unlike his mother, who was looking the other way!) while Jake Swaine hit the winning runs giving Frankton the victory.

Frankton III (20points) beat Forton II (7 points) by 1 wicket.

Sunday 8 August 2010

FBC Manby Bowdler 20:20 KO

Frankton completed a double header with Wroxeter on Sunday and were left disappointed at a 4 wicket defeat in the semi final of the 20-20 knockout. Frankton struggled with the bat and could only post 90 all out in their 20 overs. Sri Lankan Nalaka De Silva led the way with 37. The Wroxeter reply was rapid in the early stages but once both Bevan brothers were out Frankton began to slow the run rate and take wickets at regular intervals. The task proved to be beyond the Hardwick Park men as Wroxeter reached their target 6 wickets down with just over 3 overs remaining. Rich Parry-Jones was the pick of the bowling, taking 2-10 off 3 overs.

Wroxeter now play Lilleshall in the final on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August at Frankton, 1pm start.

Division One

Condover v Frankton

Frankton had the best of a hard-earned draw against lowly Condover on Saturday. Batting first, Frankton scored 241 for 6. Jon Chappell led the way with his highest score of the season, an excellent 92, He was given good support by Nalaka de Silva (21) and Jason Brookes (33) before a cameo from 17 year old Sam Phillips who scored 28 not out from the final 11 balls of the innings enabled skipper Jordan Parry to declare after 35 overs, For Condover, Matty Farr bowled well to take 5 for 71.

The Condover reply started well for Frankton, Ed Whyte taking the first 3 wickets before Charlie Haylett responded with a rapid 51. He was run out by an alert Steve Evans, and although Frankton took two more wickets, further progress was blunted by an unbeaten 7th wicket partnership between Andrew Hodgkiss (36 not out) and Dougie Farr (31 not out). Condover closed on 191 for 6 from their 45 overs.

Frankton 241 - 6 declared (J Chappell 92, J Brookes 33, S Phillips 28 not out, M Farr 5-71) drew with Condover 191 -6 (C Haylett 51, A Hodgkiss 36 no, D Farr 31no, E Whyte 3-75). Frankton 17 points, Condover 10 points.

Division Three

Frankton II v Beacon

Frankton second team entertained Beacon with both teams fighting for points at the top of table. Beacon captain Steve Reese won the toss and asked Frankton to bat first. After losing opener Rob Strange in the first over fellow opener Will Symon and captain Chris Rogers rebuilt the innings with a 50 partnership. Rogers was soon removed for 31 and Symons went 2 better with 33. This brought Dave Powell and Rob Chappell together at the crease and the pair began to build a big partnership; as Frankton entered the last 10 overs in a strong position, both batsman began to accelerate and were both out playing aggressive shots, Powell for 42 and Chappell for a well made 86. The Frankton innings eventually ended on 225-6 of their allocated 40 overs.

The Beacon innings started well with both openers reaching double figure but they were soon behind the run rate, make-shift opening bowler Will Symon bowled 9 attacking overs finishing with figures of 2-23. The introduction of spin soon accounted for the middle order with leg spinner Tom Wilkie taking 2-12 and off spinner Mark Lammie 1-20. For the third week running, the opposition tried to survive, picking up what draw points they could. However, for the second week in a row Frankton took the maximum amount of draw points with the opposition failing to get 60% of the Frankton score.

The Beacon innings finished on 119-6. Frankton 225-6 (R Chappell 86, D Powell 42) 19 points drew with Beacon 119-6 (T Wilkie 2-12, W Symon 2-23) 3 points

Frankton kept up the pressure on leaders Guilsfield after a comfortable 7 wicket victory against Worfield III. Frankton won the toss, and dismissed the visitors in 33 overs for 149, a score which would have been much less were it not for 74 from Sean Pitt. Frankton lost two wickets in scoring 48, before a stand worth 83 for the 3rd wicket won the match. New opener, George Dickin made his first half century for the club in scoring 59, guided by senior coach John James, 37 not out. Frankton got to their target in the 31st over.
